Principal’s Message
Welcome to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School Matraville. We are an inclusive faith and learning community committed to educating children, acknowledging their uniqueness and challenging them to reach their full potential.
Our school caters to families in the parishes of Our Lady of the Annunciation Pagewood and St Agnes’ Matraville, and is a new, state-of-the-art, two-stream school borne from the amalgamation of the two previous parish primary schools.
We are a school that embodies the charism of our founders, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart by committing to our school’s values of love, care, respect and justice in both our words and actions. These values continue to underpin our vision for learning.
As principal, I am passionate about providing a values-informed and holistic education for every student, enabling them to grow across all domains: academic, social, emotional, spiritual and physical.
We believe children learn best when the curriculum is challenging, stimulating and relevant, and that teaching practices support the diverse learning needs of our students. The teaching of foundational literacy and numeracy skills is a key focus. We embed 21st century skills across the curriculum, including the ability to think in creative, critical and problem-solving ways, to communicate confidently, and to work collaboratively with others.
We value the partnership of faith and education between parish, school and home. We believe that this partnership will help our children to actively engage with their faith, learning and community.
Our school site is growing with state of the art new classrooms, playgrounds and shared parish facilities as part of the Pagewood Matraville Masterplan. There will be an Early Learning Centre on site and spacious playground. To find out more, visit the project site.
I invite you to explore our website to discover how our school is a special place of learning. For those new to our community, I look forward to meeting you and your child soon.
If you are seeking enrolment, you are invited to attend our open day in March of each year to tour our school and collect an enrolment package. Get in touch with us if you’d like to enrol your child outside of the annual March-May enrolment period.
Mrs Rose André
Principal
In January 2023 Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School Matraville opened its doors to its students, families, staff and community. This name celebrates the founding religious order for both primary schools, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
Our wonderful new school offers contemporary, flexible, multi-use spaces to support modern learning practices. Students will have the opportunity to transition seamlessly between larger learning commons, small groups and personalised settings. By 2025, beautiful outdoor spaces, shared parish and school facilities, and an Early Learning Centre will be features of our new school grounds. The school will have capacity for 420 students in two classes per year from Kindergarten to Year 6.
Charism
We celebrate the charism of Jules Chevalier and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. We inspire each other to make a positive difference in our world and “to be the Heart of Jesus”.
St Agnes’ Matraville History
Our school began as the Bunnerong School of Our Lady of the Rosary in 1907 and The Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) Botany conducted the school. It commenced its first school term with 52 students in one classroom, catering for children of itinerant workers who lived in the surrounding sandhills and who were too poor to educate their children. New school buildings were added in the 1950s, also serving as the parish church.
Parish Priest Father James Munday expanded St Agnes’ School with additional land. Buildings for the school on the current site, as well as a new parish church, was officially opened and blessed in January 1966 as St Agnes’ Church. In 1981, the OLSH Sisters withdrew and the first lay principal was appointed. Further improvements to the school have included a new hall, multi-purpose library and playground areas in the last 10 years.
St Agnes’ Matraville Charism
Today, St Agnes’ is a school that embodies the OLSH charism of its founders by committing to our school’s values of love, care, respect and justice in both our words and actions. These values continue to underpin our vision for learning.
Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic School History
Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic School began in 1962 as an infants school for the parish of Pagewood. The first parish priest, Fr John Power, invited the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to staff the school.
In 1964, the school was extended to become a primary school, co-educational from K–4 and then a girls only from Years 5–6. Another important change occurred in 1992, when boys’ education was extended to Year 6. The school is now co-educational from Kindergarten to Year 6.
